JAGUAR ATHLETICS ALL-STAR CHEERLEADING
Coach Andra Hutchins 865-604-5474 Coach Farrah Newman 865-548-6609
Dear Parent,
We want to personally thank you for your interest in the Jaguar Athletics All-Star Cheerleading Program. As we begin the eleventh year of our program, we are pleased to welcome our new members and want to thank our returning cheerleaders for their loyalty. We could never have imagined the excitement and success that the Jaguar Athletics program has brought to so many children in our community over the years. In 10 years we have earned over 15 National Championship titles and over 50 Regional titles. This past year, all 3 Jaguar squads had 1st place finishes at UCA Rocky Top Competition in Knoxville. Our Jaguar Senior squad started the season with a National Championship title at the Athletic Championships in Cincinnati and then went on to earn five top 3 placings. Our Jaguar Mini and Youth squads each had three top 3 finishes in addition to their UCA Rocky Top titles. The Youth & Senior squads had impressive performances at the UCA National All-Star Cheerleading Championships at Disney World in Orlando, FL this past March. Our Youth squad placed 7th and our Senior squad placed 4th. The Jaguar All-Star squads performed at the June Jubilee, the TVAI Fair, at Carson-Newman Basketball games, and at both the University of Tennessee Men’s and Lady Vols’ Basketball games. We are very proud of the 2008-2009 Jaguar Athletics Cheerleading Squads!
With the growing demand of cheerleading in our country today, cheerleaders are finally receiving the recognition that they deserve. Many colleges and universities, such as the University of TN (& other SEC schools), Moorehead State, and the University of Central Florida, now offer full and partial scholarships for cheerleading. We, as coaches and former cheerleaders, want to provide individuals in this area with an opportunity to take cheerleading to the next level. The Jaguar Athletics All-Star Cheerleading Program consists of competition and performance squads on the tiny/mini, youth, and senior levels. The primary focus is to prepare for and compete in regional and national competitions. We train our cheerleaders in all areas of cheerleading excellence – including motions, dance, tumbling, jumps, pyramids, stunting, & showmanship. We also train our cheerleaders in developing overall strength and endurance which will create a solid foundation for more active and healthier lifestyles.
Whether or not your child has ever cheered, we feel confident that we can train them to be the best they can be – as long as they are willing to learn and as long as you, as their parents, are committed to our program. Please understand that this is a 10-month commitment, both financially and socially. We strongly encourage you to review the hours and costs involved to ensure that there are not conflicts which will prevent you from fully participating in this program. Being a part of the Jaguar Athletics program requires a commitment on the part of the cheerleaders and parents to practice two times each week (approximately 4 hours/week) and to travel during approximately 6 weekends during the 10-month season. As you know with any team sport, it is very difficult to practice unless everyone is present. When learning and practicing routines, perfect attendance is crucial. Absences severely limit the effectiveness of the practice. We understand that most children are involved in many activities; however, the only sport that we will "work with" is school cheerleading. For those who are participating in their school’s cheerleading programs, we need close communication with parents and cheerleaders about the school’s practice and ball game schedule in advance in order to coordinate the two schedules. Please make sure that your schedule during the fall and winter can accommodate the hours this program requires. During the summer months (June and July), we understand that you have vacations planned. However, we do ask that you make every effort to have your child at all practices when you are in town.
It is our goal as coaches to develop and enhance a sense of self-confidence, teamwork, dedication, and commitment among each individual squad member, as well as to instill good ethical standards and encourage academic achieve- ment. We feel confident that your child will benefit from our program – while also having fun! Please read the entire package thoroughly and be sure that you completely understand the commitment expected from our parents and cheerleaders. We look forward to working with you & your cheerleader during the 2009-10 Jaguar cheer season!
Sincerely,
Andra and Farrah

COMPETITION RULES:
Competitions are MANDATORY. There are no excused absences from competitions. All of our cheerleaders have an essential role in the competition routine. We are unable to perform at our best if anyone if absent.
Competition attire includes: uniform top and skirt, bloomers, jaguar socks, shoes, hair bow, make-up, and face tattoo.
Hair is worn in a ponytail. All stray hairs and bangs should be pulled back out of face with hair clips. No jewelry (including navel rings) or nail polish can be worn at competitions.
Please arrive on time for competitions. We will go over meeting times and locations at a parent meeting before each competition. If you are unsure of instructions or directions, please contact Andra or Farrah. Being late places undue stress upon the rest of your squad and the coaches. If you are not fully ready to compete at the meeting time designated (if you are still putting on make-up and tattoos), then you are considered tardy.
When arriving to competitions, all cheerleaders must be in full uniform or wearing optional warm-up. These are your
only two options. Please do not show up in jeans or mismatching warm-ups. We want to look good and represent our program well both on and off the cheer floor.
Parents are responsible for getting their cheerleader(s) to and from each competition. If you cannot attend a competition, you need to make arrangements for your child to ride with and be under the care of another parent.
Our squads will compete in different divisions taking place at various times throughout the day. All cheerleaders should be present to cheer for the other teams in our program, even if that means coming early or staying late.
We are a family; and as a family, we will support each other. All cheerleaders need to stay for their own awards
ceremony. Full uniform needs to be worn for the awards ceremony – and no additional clothing is allowed.
We will have a designated hotel block for each of our out of town competitions. You are not required to stay at that hotel; however, it is encouraged as it is a great time for our cheerleaders to bond and our families to get to know each other. For the Cincinnati and Chattanooga competitions, we require a 2-night stay (Friday and Saturday nights). We normally practice at the competition arena on Friday night before the competitions. These practices are mandatory.
PERFORMANCES
The Jaguar Athletics Cheerleading Squads typically perform at 4-6 local establishments and area functions throughout the year. TUESDAYS – GYMNASTICS AT JEFFERSON CITY COMMUNITY CENTER
(VARIOUS TIMES AVAILABLE)
THURSDAYS – PRACTICE AT JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
MINI SQUAD – 6:30-8:00 PM
YOUTH AND SENIOR SQUADS – 6:30-8:30 PM
SATURDAYS – GYMNASTICS AND PRACTICE AT JEFFERSON CITY COMMUNITY CENTER
GYMNASTICS 8:30-9:30
PRACTICE FOR ALL 3 SQUADS 9:30-11:30 AM
This should remain our practice schedule for the entire season, though we usually move practices up 30 minutes on Thursday evenings so that our cheerleaders are not out too late on a school night. We practice at Carson-Newman Student Activities Center on Saturday mornings during the months of January-March due to recreation league basketball at the Jefferson City Community Center.
PRACTICES:
Practices are essential to the development of the cheerleader and to the squad as a whole. We practice only 4 hours each week and expect our cheerleaders to compete at a very high level of skill. Therefore, every practice is considered vital and important. Our practices are closed to parents, family, and friends. With limited time each week, we must limit distractions as much as possible. Parents are welcome to walk the track at the Jefferson City Community Center during practices (please pay $1 walking fee).
GYMNASTICS:
Gymnastics classes are an essential part of our cheerleading program. Tumbling skills can count as much as 20% of our competition scores. Attendance at gymnastics is not optional. Unlike cheerleading practices, gymnastics classes can be made up if an absence is absolutely necessary. Please contact Andra before June 2 to arrange your gymnastics class time. Try to plan your gymnastics schedule so that it can remain consistent during the entire cheer season. Our gymnastics classes remain at full capacity year-round, making it difficult to accommodate mid-season changes.
ATTENDANCE:
Every cheerleader is expected to attend all practices, gymnastics classes, performances, and competitions. One person’s absence has a negative effect on the entire team. Therefore, please arrange your schedules so that you may attend every practice and event. We do our best to keep our practice schedule consistent so that you can plan in advance. We do add a few additional practices during the competition season, all of which you will be notified of at least one month in advance. These additional practices are mandatory.
The fewer absences we have during our regularly scheduled practices, the fewer additional practices we will need to prepare for an upcoming competition.
We challenge our cheerleaders to miss no more than 4 practices during each quarter (summer, fall, spring).
We realize that there will be certain times during the year when your child will have to miss practice. Excessive absences will result in dismissal from the squad. Any absence without prior discussion with coaches may result in dismissal, as well. Below is a list of what we consider to be excused and unexcused absences:
Excused Absences Lame-Excuse Absences
Death in family Sick but not contagious (can sit & watch)
School field trips (2 week notice) Optional school activities or trips
Sick with fever > 101.5 Birthday parties
Any contagious condition Transportation problems
Pre-approved absence request Homework or tests (plan ahead)
(2-week notice required) Rec league or other sporting events
School cheerleading game Any absence the week of a competition
Family vacations Fundraising
Tardiness and Leaving Early: Tardiness and leaving early is a sign of disrespect to your teammates and coaches. If you are going to be more than 5 minutes late, then please call Andra or Farrah. If you need to leave early from a practice, this needs to be pre-approved two weeks before the date.
PRACTICE CLOTHING:
Practice clothing must be worn at all practices. Thursday practice clothing will be Gray camp t-shirt and purple shorts (coming soon). Saturday practice clothing will arrive by mid-June. Until then, there will be no set outfit required for Saturday practices. Cheer shoes can only be worn at Jaguar cheer practices and gymnastics classes, as well as competitions and performances (unless otherwise instructed).
Hair should be worn in ponytail or at least pulled back out of eyes. No jewelry needed during practice.
FOOD AND DRINKS:
It is the policy of all the facilities we use for practices that we have only water in the practice area. Therefore, no food or other types of beverages are allowed at practice. We do provide water breaks during practices. Also, no gum or candy is allowed during practices. It is important to eat before practices to ensure enough energy to execute skills, but please allow adequate time for digestion (20-30 minutes).
We often give treats at practices or special events and parties. Please inform the coaching staff if your child has any food allergies.
VALUABLES AND CELL PHONES:
We will not be responsible for any valuables left at any of the facilities where we practice or any performance or competition locations. Please do not bring extra items, particularly those of value, to practices, performances, or competitions. Cell phones are not allowed at practices. If brought to practice, they must be on "silent" or turned off. Phone calls will be limited to emergency purposes only. This includes calls to and from parents.
FITNESS AND FLEXIBILITY:
All-star cheerleading is a very demanding sport with a long season. A high level of fitness is essential in being able to execute cheerleading skills during a 2 ½ minute routine. Our cheerleaders need to be committed to achieving and maintaining the physical strength and endurance needed to successfully perform all parts of our cheer routine. Cheerleaders will have workouts during practices 1-2 times each week. All of the flexibility, conditioning, and agility exercises we do during our practice workouts can and should be performed at home 1-2 times each week.
PARENT MEETINGS:
Parent meetings are held once each month, normally on the first or second Saturday of the month. These meetings are 45 minutes to one hour in length. You will be informed of the date for the parent meetings 1-2 months in advance. Please make every effort for 1 parent from each family to attend. Good communication between parents and coaches is vital to the success of our program. As payment is due by the first Saturday of the month, please be prepared with your payment at the parent meeting.
We also have 2-3 individual parent meetings during the year to discuss any account balances and be sure our payment records are correct.
If you need at any time to discuss your child’s progress or any problems, please call Andra or Farrah to set up a meeting time for this discussion. During practice is NEVER a good time to discuss anything with the
coaches. Before and after practice may not be optimal times either, depending on the coaches’ schedules. Therefore, it is best to pre-arrange a meeting time with the coaches.
